Harry B. Smith

HARRY B. SMITH was a prolific stage writer, having contributed to more than 300 librettos and lyrics for more than 6,000 tunes. His early career was as a music and drama critic for Chicago newspapers. Some of his best known works were created with Victor Herbert, Reginald deKoven, Jerome Kern and Irving Berlin. Credits include Ziegfeld Follies (1907, 1908, 1909, 1910), The Lilac Domino, Very Good Eddie, Watch Your Step, Love o’ Mike, Countess Maritza and Florodora. Smith authored several novels and an autobiography, First Nights and First Editions, as well as introductions to volumes of Shakespeare and Dickens. He was a charter member of ASCAP, serving as a director from 1914 to 1917.
